Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • Zest of 1 orange
  • 1 cup softened butter
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • ¼ cup freshly squeezed orange juice

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease two round cake pans and line with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt until combined.
  3. In another bowl, beat granulated sugar and eggs until fluffy. Add buttermilk, vegetable oil, vanilla extract, and orange zest; mix until well combined.
  4. Gradually add dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring gently until just combined.
  5. Pour batter evenly into prepared pans. Bake for about 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Cool in pans for 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks.
  6. While cakes cool, beat softened butter and cream cheese until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar and orange juice; mix until smooth.
  7. Once cakes are cool, place one layer on a serving plate and spread frosting on top. Add the second layer and frost the top and sides of the cake.
