Description

Indulge in warm, soft pretzels with a golden-brown crust and a chewy texture that evokes childhood memories of fairs and festivities.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 and 1/2 cups warm water
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 and 1/4 tsp)
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup baking soda
  • Coarse sea salt (to taste)

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, mix warm water and sugar. Sprinkle yeast on top and let it sit for about five minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour and salt until well combined.
  3. Pour the activated yeast mixture into the flour mixture. Stir until combined, then knead on a floured surface for about five minutes until smooth.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size (about one hour).
  5. Divide the risen dough into eight pieces. Roll each piece into long ropes (around 24 inches) and twist them into the classic pretzel shape.
  6. In a large pot, bring water to a boil and add baking soda. Carefully dip each pretzel into the bath for about 30 seconds before placing them on parchment-lined baking sheets. Sprinkle with coarse salt. Bake at 425°F (220°C) for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.
  7. Enjoy your Homemade Soft Pretzels fresh from the oven with your favorite dipping sauces such as mustard or cheese sauce.
