Ingredients
Scale
- 1 package (16 oz) phyllo dough
- 1 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 2 cups walnuts or pistachios, finely chopped
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup honey
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a large baking dish with melted butter.
- In a food processor, combine the walnuts or pistachios with ground cinnamon until finely chopped but not powdered.
- Unroll the phyllo dough and cover it with a damp cloth to prevent drying out. Lay one sheet in the greased dish and brush lightly with melted butter. Repeat this for seven sheets.
- Evenly sprinkle about one cup of the nut mixture over the layered phyllo sheets. Add five more layers of phyllo, brushing each with melted butter.
- Add another layer of nuts followed by more buttered phyllo sheets until all filling is used, topping off with around eight more buttered sheets.
- Cut diamond shapes into the top layer using a sharp knife and bake for about 45-50 minutes until golden brown.
- In a saucepan over medium heat, combine sugar, honey, water, and lemon juice. Bring to a boil, then simmer for about ten minutes.
- Once the baklava is baked, pour the hot syrup evenly over it while still warm.
